Neath Port Talbot Council is committed to promoting Sustainable Development through our policies, strategies, and services. Community Benefits seek to promote additional opportunities in public contracts which will benefit the wider community thus ensuring we achieve maximum value for the money we spend.
It helps to build stronger communities, reduce social exclusion and poverty, and encourage the development of the economy. It is a way of ensuring there is a long-lasting positive impact on our communities and further supports our duty to comply with the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015 which requires us to seek to improve the economic, social, environmental, and cultural well-being of the County in all that we do.
Community Benefits clauses are now commonly written into our contracts and cover a wide range of areas including:
• Targeted Recruitment & Training (TR&T) – to include apprenticeships, work experience and employment of disadvantaged groups
• Supply Chain Initiatives – maximising opportunities for SME’s to tender or bid for contract opportunities
• Environmental initiatives – support for the Council’s Decarbonisation & Renewable Energy strategy
• Educational Initiatives – to include local schools and colleges engagement activities
• Community initiatives – support for local community projects
• Retention & Training of existing workforce
• Engagement with the Third Sector
Successful contractors are expected to work with the Council’s Community Benefits Officer to maximise community benefits on projects and to engage with the Neath Port Talbot Employer Support Group (ESG), a partnership group which brings together a wide range of local organisations to support employment and recruitment needs in the area.
