Neath Port Talbot County Council commissioned the design, development and construction of a new childcare unit, together with associated improvement works, in Cwmavon. The contract was awarded to TRJ Ltd, with a strong focus placed on delivering social value and creating lasting benefits for local people, businesses and communities.
Supporting the Local Economy
The project made a significant contribution to the Welsh economy, with 100% of all subcontracting work awarded to Wales-based businesses. By sourcing services and expertise locally, the project helped support regional supply chains, sustain employment and ensure investment remained within the local economy.
Developing Skills and Creating Opportunities
TRJ Ltd demonstrated a strong commitment to workforce development by creating five apprenticeship opportunities throughout the project. Collectively, these placements provided 88 weeks of valuable work experience for young people from Neath Port Talbot, helping to develop practical skills, improve employability and support future career pathways within the construction sector.
Engaging with Future Talent
As part of the company’s wider commitment to education and skills development, Community Engagement Officer Stuart Thomas supported mock interview sessions at Birchgrove Comprehensive School and Dŵr y Felin Comprehensive School. These activities gave students valuable insight into recruitment processes while helping them build confidence and interview skills in preparation for their future careers.
Promoting Careers and Employment
TRJ Ltd also actively supported a number of careers and jobs fairs organised by Neath Port Talbot County Council. Through direct engagement with students, jobseekers and members of the community, the company helped raise awareness of employment and training opportunities available within the construction industry.
TRJ Ltd further demonstrated its commitment to the local community through a donation of an Amazon voucher to Jayne Midwinter, Flying Start Parenting Support Worker, who helps facilitate the Stay & Play Parenting Group in Cwmafan. The contribution enabled the group to purchase new construction-themed play equipment, providing children and families attending the weekly sessions with additional opportunities for learning, creativity and interactive play.
The Cwmavon Childcare Unit project demonstrates how investment in local infrastructure can deliver benefits far beyond the physical build, creating opportunities for local businesses, supporting skills development and helping to inspire the next generation of talent across Neath Port Talbot.
